Debt is isolating.

It’s easy to look around and see friends that seem to have everything together. It’s like you can see those perfect credit scores hanging above their perfect lives, taunting you.

It’s easy to feel like you’re all alone and there’s nowhere to turn that could offer empathy, understanding, and most of all, solutions.

Debt has a way of tricking you into believing a few key lies that stand in the way of debt recovery. Let’s walk through these lies, debunk them, and get you started on the road to credit card debt recovery.

Lie 1: You are All Alone

It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that you are the only person with mountains of debt. But the truth is that 8 out of every 10 Americans is carrying some kind of debt. 80%. EIGHTY PERCENT. You are very much part of the majority.

Another part of this lie? Thinking you have to navigate the path to recovery on your own.

This is the reason that credit counseling agencies exist. They are there to give you credit advice, and to help tailor a solution to fit your unique situation. No one expects you to walk this road alone.

Lie 2: Your Debt is Insurmountable

We have yet to laugh someone out of our office because they had just TOO. MUCH. DEBT.

When you’re staring at that dollar amount and comparing it against your income, it can seem like there is no solution. It’s simply too much debt, and you’ll never be rid of it.

Absolutely not. It’s just a number. It might be a big number, but as the wise woman said: How do you eat an elephant?

One bite at a time

So how do you pay down seemingly insurmountable debt?

One dollar at a time

Every step you take, every payment you make, is another step toward financial freedom. Will it take time? Yes. Will sacrifices have to be made while you’re working toward your goal? Sure. But there is rarely any such thing as insurmountable debt.

And our job as credit counselors it to help you tackle that debt elephant.

Lie 3: You Don’t Deserve Relief

This is a tough one.

Debt can trap you in a shame-cycle until you start believing that you deserve to be crippled by debt, that it is somehow your punishment for bad decisions, whether the debt was caused by poor habits or not.

It’s vital to get rid of that idea right away.

First, if your debt is the result of life hitting you a little too hard, it is absolutely not your fault, so there is no way you deserve what is happening.

But even if your debt is the result of your own poor choices, perhaps overuse of a credit card or pathological spending, it’s important to remember that everyone deserves a second (or third or fourth) chance. You can change your habits, and you deserve the chance to try.

Lie 4: Bankruptcy is Your Only Option

Bankruptcy is frightening. And it can sometimes feel like the only way to rid yourself of the mountains of credit card debt. Too many people simply don’t realize how many options there are for credit card debt relief.

From credit counseling to debt management to debt settlement, there are myriad options. And while bankruptcy may be an option, it is far from the only one, and it certainly isn’t the first one a credit counselor will leap to upon seeing your situation.

You can avoid bankruptcy, but it’s important to get help before it becomes inevitable.

The Truth: You Aren’t Alone

You are in good company. Most people are carrying some kind of debt.

And you don’t have to carry it alone. Credit advice is available, and you can be debt free with a little help.

So get rid of the lies your debt has been telling you. It’s time to find a path to financial freedom and debt free living.
